2024 MRASH Preconference Workshop

Working with Media to Communicate Ag Health and Safety Messaging

Sponsored by the Great Plains Center for Agricultural Health

Wednesday, November 6, 2024, 1:00-3:30 p.m.

Meeting Room 154, Best Western Plus University Park Inn and Suites, 2500 University Boulevard, Ames, IA

Keeping with the Messaging Matters theme of MRASH Conference 2024, the Great Plains Center for Agricultural Health has put together a skills development workshop on improving communication with the media when sharing agricultural health and safety messages.

Representatives from multiple media outlets, both print and broadcast, will identify how they interact with researchers and safety advocates to tell a story to their audience. They will highlight:

  • what they are looking for when they reach out for conversations, interviews, and investigations
  • tips for helpful communication when working on specific stories
  • guidance on formulating press releases
  • tips on sharing important and timely information with the media

There is no cost to attend the pre-conference workshop, but registration is required.

Discussion Leader: Cheryl Tevis, long time MRASH attendee, is a founding member of Iowa Women in Ag and has worked at Successful Farming, eventually serving as the Senior Risk Management Editor. Tevis is a longstanding member of the I-CASH Advisory Board and the CS-CASH External Advisory Committee.

Tevis will lead the panel, below, through a set of discussion topics and guide the audience through how to share your stories effectively in the modern media climate.

  • Jared Strong, Cedar Rapids Gazette, investigative reporter on agriculture and environment
  • Lyle Muller, Professional Advisor, Grinnell; Midwest Center for Investigative Reporting board member
  • Zoe Martin, Managing Editor, Iowa Farmer Today | IFT Publications
  • Rachel Cramer, Iowa Public Radio, Harvest Public Media, including agriculture and environmental issues

When you register for the preconference workshop, you will be asked to include a question you want the journalists to answer.  Please bring at least 5 business cards with you to the workshop to facilitate networking.
