2011 Agricultural Youth Grant Participants

I-CASH awarded funds to eight all-terrain vehicle (ATV) safety projects from the following recipients:

Calhoun County Public Health (serving Calhoun county)
Local Public Health will partner with ISU Extension to support local youth as they present ATV safety information and distribute visibility items during pesticide training. Acitivities will include a 4-H display booth and handouts at the Calhoun County Exposition, and a Farm Safety Day Session for 2nd graders and their parents.

Clark County Extension Office (serving counties in SE Iowa)
The goal is ensure safe handling to reduce the likelihood of ATV injury or death. With this grant I’ll have the opportunity to reach and educate a larger group of individuals via an ATV Safety workshop, and provide educational materials they can take home. After the event I would like to put some pictures and information regarding our event in area news papers. Hopefully this will create awareness of ATV safety and get other groups interested in presenting ATV safety programs.

Dike-New Hartford Junior High School (serving Grundy and Butler counties)
Corner to Corner Safety will provide a safety course in a small rural area that includes activities for ATV training, lawn mower training, sun safety and noise exposure. The afternoon training will involve the Junior High, providing basic instruction on the topics listed. Exposure to these topics will enhance the instructional programs.

East Pottawattamie County 4-H (serving east Pottawattamie county)
Our County Youth Council (CYC), a group of high school 4-Hers, are planning an ATV safety day. County youth will bring their ATV’s and learn safe riding techniques. An ATV safety speaker will start off the event, giving the youth instruction and knowledge of the current ATV and OHV laws. Our event location will offer multiple terrain types and obstacles to give hands-on learning to maneuver safely with instruction.

Grant 4-Hers (serving Ida county)
Will share ATV safety information at the Ida County Fair, giving out ATV flags, as well as visibility and safety information. At the end of our project, we hopte our club members and community will be safety and more informed ATV users.

Manchester Area Chamber of Commerce (serving Manchester, Delaware and Clayton counties)
We already include ATV safety in our 7th Grade Farm Safety Day activities, but with this help we will enlarge on that and offer an afternoon session open to anyone with an interest.

National Education Center for Agricultural Safety (serving Dubuque, Delaware, Jones, Jackson, Clayton, Fayette and Winnishiek counties)
Our goal is to increase community awareness of safe ATV operation practices. We plan to use a train-the-trainer model, providing program packets to FFA senior leadership and their FFA advisors in each school district. Packets will include ATV safety handouts, current data on ATV injuries and fatalities, laminated photos to post, and a flash drive with an ATV safety power point presentation loaded and ready for use.

Town and Country Farm Safety (serving Butler, Franklin, Grundy and Hardin counties)
Our mission is to provide education opportunities for our four-county area, prmoting health and safety on the farm and injury prevention to youth under 19 years of age. Will have a poster contest.
