I-CASH awarded funds to 13 farm safety projects. The recipients for 2013 were:
Benton County Extension-purchased drug /drunk driver goggles and stop/drop/roll vests. We used the goggles to simulate the impaired vision etc. when driving, operating equipment or even walking. We used the vest to show what to do when you are exposed to a fire on your body. We participated in a two hour safety event at Garrison Fun Days on July 13, 2013 and promoted our September Farm Safety Day.
Delaware County Extension– Four ag safety days for preschoolers, kindegarteners and first graders. FFA students researched and presented on farm safety topics. Seven safety stations provided information on seat belt usage, water and animal safety, hidden hazards, 911. Also had an educational farm safety puppet show.
Des Moines County 4-H– Farm Safety Day Camp for kids in lower elementary grades. Older youth assisted with presenting and volunteering at the camp. A display of the camp activities was shown at the county fair.
Dike-New Hartford Community Schools– Poster contest on topics of four wheeler safety, lawn mower safety, sun and hearing hazards
Guthrie Center FFA– FFA members instructed 3rd graders on 4-wheeler safety using power-point, videos and safety equipment.
Howard County 4-H– Two-day Farm Safety event. Presented topics that included farm equipment education. Several area youth and adults had personal stories of farm accident survival to sure with a desire to educate others. Grain dust mask distributed to each participant, and youth safety vests were provided and each youth went home with a bag of safety resources. 128 adults and 211 youth received educational programming.
Jefferson County Extension– Purchased farm safety DVDs, first aid kits, Safe Operation of Agricultural Equipment Student manuals, and Tug of War with Grain card packets for give-aways. Used these and a grain safety display to talk about safety at the Fairfield Kiwanis Kid’s Day.
Kossuth FFA/FS4JK– Educated 1st graders on farm safety via interactive stations. Each student took a first aid kit home. Also had a farm safety coloring contest.
Mitchell County Exten
sion– Provided a Farm Safety Day Camp to all 4th grade students in the county. Covered safety topics of grain, PTO, animals, ATVs, tractor visibility and safety,etc. Pre- and post-tests were given to students in their classroom.
Story County Extension– Story County ISU Extension and Outreach staff partnered with the Grant Guys & Gals 4-H Club and the Story County Fair Board to host an Ag Awareness Day at the Story County Fair on July 21, 2013. Activities included Approaching Animals Safely, chemical safety, electrical and grain bin hazards, ATV safety.
Twin Cedars FFA– Ag Safety Day: Poster contest, farm safety scenarios, promoted via Twitter and Facebook.
Van Buren FFA– Our FFA chapter sponsored an Ag Safety Day event e to remind elementary students and their families how to remain safe while living on or visiting a farm. Our safety stations included: machinery, ATV, lawn mower, livestock, wildlife, basic first aid, fire, weather, chemical and water. We also had educational stations including pork producers, an organic dairy, honey bees, and beef producers. The event was open to parents and family of the elementary students. We encouraged a family member to attend so we can remind the parents how to keep their children safe.
Washington County
Extension– Project “Stay Safe, Take a Break” targeted farmers during the busy fall harvest. 4-H County Council youth selected and delivered bags of items that promote safety to farmers, including goggles, dust masks, and SMV signs. These are delivered to farmers when they are in the field, to give the farmers a five minute break. Bags promoted at the Progressive Ag Farm Safety Day.
